NCKU LiDAR Winter School 2027

January 11-15
Tainan, Taiwan

Getting Hands-on with High Density Scanning

Join the LiDAR Winter School 2027 at the Department of Geomatics, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)—a 5-day intensive program designed to advance your expertise in laser scanning technologies. Now in its third edition, the Winter School has received highly positive feedback from participants in previous years. This course covers the operational theory and data processing of various laser scanning systems, including Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS), Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS), Handheld SLAM LiDAR, and UAV LiDAR. It also introduces web-based platform applications for LiDAR point cloud data.

A half-day outing will take place in Tainan (outside the NCKU campus) to gain hands-on experience with TLS, Handheld SLAM LiDAR, and UAV SLAM LiDAR systems. Data processing procedures will be introduced in the computer room of the Department of Geomatics. Participants are encouraged to bring their own high-performance laptop (recommended specs: high-speed CPU, minimum 16 GB RAM, and a dedicated GPU).

Beyond the academic curriculum, participants will enjoy networking opportunities through organized social events, including a welcome ice-breaking dinner. All lunches and refreshments are provided throughout the course duration.

We welcome graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, early-career professionals, and industry practitioners interested in laser scanning technologies. This Winter School is designed to enhance your knowledge and technical skills, and to help open new opportunities in the geospatial industries.

Participants will collaborate on team projects designed to deepen their understanding of LiDAR technologies. We strongly encourage participants to bring their own datasets and research challenges, giving you the opportunity to explore potential approaches to your specific applications while learning from diverse perspectives.

Secure your spot and open new opportunities in the geospatial industry!

Registration

To apply for the 2027 LiDAR Winter School, please complete the official registration form by the application deadline of 30 September 2026.

Admission Rounds

After the application deadline, all applications will be reviewed and admission results announced in three rounds, as follows:

Please note: Student capacity is strictly limited. If the program reaches maximum capacity in an earlier round, admission will close immediately, and later rounds will not open.

Admitted applicants must complete registration, including payment of the deposit, within 14 days of notification, in order to confirm their seat.

Selection & Diversity Policy

Admission to the winter school is competitive and evaluated by the local organizing committee. To assist us in the review process, please clearly outline your academic or research background and explain its relevance to LiDAR technologies in your application.

To foster a truly global learning environment and maximize international collaboration, the committee prioritizes geographic diversity. Seats are limited per country to ensure broad global representation.

The committee reserves the right of final interpretation.

Registration Fee
Accommodation & Visa

The registration fee does not include accommodation or visa-related expenses; these are the sole responsibility of each participant. To assist with planning, the committee will provide a list of recommended accommodations near NCKU prior to the event. Participants requiring a visa to enter Taiwan are strongly advised to begin the application process well in advance of the program dates.
